Basically, daylight saving time is a practice that involves moving the clocks an hour forward during spring and back again in the fall. The idea of daylight saving time is to have more daylight during summer as well as to save energy. The fact is that DST has its some advantages, although in the modern society not everyone is convinced about this idea. Basically, daylight savings time history is now almost a century and things have gone through tremendous change over that time.
The initial plan was to maximally utilize daylight during summer as well as save energy costs. Nevertheless, things have changed and the argument doesn’t seem valid. Many people are, however, getting tired of the DST practice. Because of this, it has raised the petition to end daylight saving time.
The DST practice doesn’t seem any better anymore like it was initially. Because of the shortcomings of DST, it seems good to get rid of daylight saving time. The following are some of the reasons why the need to end this practice seems valid.
1. It doesn’t save energy costs.
One of the main reason why DST was introduced is to save energy. By moving one hour forward in the spring adds an hour of daylight. Because of this, people can use the extra daylight to work and do their business. As a result, artificial is less used thereby saving energy.
Today, however, there is minimal or negligible energy saved as a result of this DST practice. This is because there are computers, air conditioning units and TV screens that use even more energy. Instead, these devices tend to increase energy costs. Since the energy saved from DST today is negligible, more people find it necessary to get rid of daylight saving time.
2. It can cause people to be sick.
By changing time even by a single hour disrupts the circadian rhythm or body clock. Often many people are inconvenienced by the tiredness that arises from daylight saving time. For some people, this change in time may have serious consequences. It has been found that miscarriages, workplace injuries, and car accidents increase at the start of DST because of lack of better sleep. Also, the early evening darkness after the daylight saving time has been found to increase the risk of depression. Again, the risk of suffering from heart attack is increased at the onset of DST.
There is also economic disadvantage after DST transition since productivity is found to decrease. Therefore, the various shortcomings of DST have raised concerns whether the practice should continue. This has resulted in the end daylight savings time petition.
